Independent Living for disabled family members still living at home

Who wants to form a discussion group that tries to find solutions that may help transition our disabled family members into independent living in the nearby community?

Please add your comments below if you would like to get involved in a discussion and planning group that tries to solve the BIG unanswered question for many families.

Estate Planning

In August 2009 the Auxiliary invited three specialist advisors (Warren Seeto, accountant, Matt Hourn, lawyer and Greg Ginn, financial planning) to address the meeting. Also at about the same time Marjorie Janz from Warringah Shire Council arranged a seminar where Johnathon Harris and Caroline Bass from Harris Friedman Hyde Page, lawyers, presented on the same subject.

The reports circulated at or after these two sessions are found here:
Estate Planning
and
Special Disability Trusts

Making plans and arrangements that will enable a disabled family member to "survive" the demise of parents (both economically and emotionally) is a key matter for most families touched by disability.

There are many unanswered questions so if you wish to discuss this matter or have some interesting angles please add your comments below and help form a discussion group that can make sure we are all as well informed and prepared as we can be.

Vale Dorothy Payne

Dorothy Payne, the wife of our late long time Director and Deputy Chair Trevor Payne, has died after a long illness.

Many of our longer term members will remember Dorothy from the former Sunnyfield Auxiliary and for the way she supported Trevor in all his activities. My wife Wendy and I were privileged to know Dorothy for over 30 years through Sunnyfield and we will truly miss Dorothy as we have missed Trevor’s guidance and most active participation.

I am sure all members of the new Auxiliary will join with me in offering our sincere sympathy to Dorothy’s family, her three children Jenny, Rod and Chris and their families. We should be particularly grateful to Margie for the way she has represented our Auxiliary to the Board of Directors.

Bryan Whiddon

Welcome all members of the Sunnyfield Auxilliary to 2010 - the 58th year of Sunnyfield’s existence.

I think it is fair to say that we had a fairly turbulent first year in 2009. However, I believe it is important to note that many of the the problems we raised with Sunnyfield are gradually being solved.

Communications with the members was a frequent cause for complaint and I believe that management have gone a long way towards remedying this. It is right that our members continue to raise matters that concern them but it is also right that we as members accept the opportunities to participate with management and the Board when the opportunities arise.

If the Auxilliary is to go from strength to strength it is vital that all members are active in their support and in persuading all members who are not yet involved that it is to their advantage to join and make their opinions known.

We should offer our thanks to the Board of Directors for accepting the new Auxilliary and listening to what our members have to say.

SUPERANNUATION FOR OUR DISABLED KIDS

SMALL DEPOSITS MEAN MOST INTEREST GOES IN FEES PAID

Does anyone else have an issue with this? I do: about $500 in the fund, maybe $50 p.a. interest and $25 p.a. in fees. Going nowhere fast and I cannot transfer the balance into my family super where I can do a MUCH better deal in management fees.

Should the Auxiliary see if it can find someone else who can take on this function and make a bit more money (charge smaller fees) for our kids?
