And we thought our guys were doing it tough!

I do appreciate how hard it is for families with intellectual disabled relatives but sometimes it pays to reflect that one can overcome enormous obstacles.  Here is a lady who is clearly very determined.
Any comments?

In Control, Sunnyfield, THE BIG EVENT, Penrith Aug 27

In Control believes that together we are better, and the Big Event is open to everyone. Unlike other events catering solely for professionals, the Big Event encourages people from all walks of like to attend. Family members and carers, key influencers from local communities, government agencies and service providers as well as professionals from the Human Services sector will find this event very applicable.

It is an invaluable opportunity to network, explore the support and services on offer, hear real-life experiences, and to find out the latest developments in this fast changing world of personalisation.

A copy of the brochure is here.
"We are very proud to be hosting Australia’s first ‘The Big Event’ supporting people to get a life...not just a service.  The event brings together a host of people, all united by a common aim – to help people to be fully in control of their lives.  This expo style event brings together 100 delegates, 8 presenters including high profile key note speakers".
Congratulations to Sunnyfield and Michaela Kennedy for this great family support

Robbi Williams (no not the singer), Julia Farr and Disability Standards

This Robbi Williams is the CEO of SA's Julia Farr Organisation and he has a solid uncompromising view of the goods and bads of disability. You may agree, you may disagree, but at least he provokes us to think about the lot we currently have for our disabled family members.

Here is an extract from his Blog...

As you may know, there is currently a review of the National Standards for Disability Services.

The Standards were implemented in 1993 with the goal of ensuring Commonwealth and State funded disability services have a positive impact in people’s lives. The Standards provide the framework for disability service provision expectations and apparently the Standards focus on ensuring services are addressing the principles and objectives of Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, including assisting people to integrate into community, assisting people to achieve positive outcomes, such as Independence, and promoting in the community a positive image of people and enhancing their self-esteem (taken from the Commonwealth Disability Services Act 1986, which you can access by clicking here).

Well, if that’s true then the Standards have failed. Failed, failed, failed. Just reading the Shut Out Report (see the Sunnyfield December Blog Dr Rhonda Galbally "Shut Out" report for our posting) is more than enough evidence of that. Seventeen years on from the introduction of the Standards, there are many, many Australians living with disability who have not been assisted to integrate into community, who have not been supported to achieve positive outcomes such as independence, and where there are not sufficient positive images within community of people living with disability as valued citizens.
