Healthier Lives in Western Sydney Forum – June 22nd 2010
This day was a large success with over 170 people taking part in over 15 different sessions and presentations.
Some feedback received included:
“Just a note to let you know how much the guys enjoyed the forum on Tuesday. The dental information has been taken on board by the guys and already put into practice”
“I thought the day was excellent; the speakers giving good advice and in a way that was understandable for all attending.
"I know that it helped one of my Members to understand how important it is to take care of their health; they promised me they would have their hearing tested.”

Productivity Commission Inquiry into Disability Care and Support
NSW CID Speak Out Reach Out (SORO) Members have decided that they will be making an Easy Read Submission to this Inquiry.
As part of this process the members will be holding education sessions and focus groups to learn about the issues involved.
Members have been talking about the Inquiry and are keen to find out as much as possible before they make their submission.

What is Intelligence ? What is Intellectual Disability ? Trevor Parmenter’s Festschrift
The Centre for Disability Studies has organised a Festchrift (a book honouring a respected person) for recently retired Professor Trevor Parmenter.
This includes a seminar with a range of speakers – all talking about intelligence and intellectual disability.
When: Saturday August 14th, 2010
Where: Kolling Building at Royal North Shore Hospital, St. Leonards

New Being a Healthy Woman Resource!
The NSW Department of Health has produced a new resource for women with intellectual disability.
This is a book to help women with intellectual disability learn more about their health. It also provides a list of resources on disability for women with intellectual disability, their family members, carers or health care professionals.
It can be used as a teaching tool to help women with intellectual disability learn about their health. Congratulations to Kim Walker and Yvette Proud who represented NSW CID in the working party for this resource.

Legislative Council Inquiry into services provided or funded by ADHC
The Legislative Council’s Standing Committee on Social Issues has called an Inquiry into Services provided or funded by the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care. (ADHC)
It is examining the quality, effectiveness and delivery of services provided by or funded by ADHC.
There are 7 terms of references including variations in service delivery, waiting lists, program quality between services and regions; the extent of unmet need and compliance with Disability Services Standards.
NSW CID will be preparing a submission for this Inquiry and will be consulting widely with members and service users in order to accurately reflect their experiences.
Anyone can make a submission. Submissions will be accepted until 6th August 2010.

Supported living Creating a home of one’s own with self directed support – August 9th – Parliament House
This seminar will showcase Homes West, Brisbane and My Place, Perth, two services that support people with disability in homes of their own with a combination of formal and informal support.

The Big Event – August 27th 2010 – Penrith Panthers
This event will talk about Supporting People to Get A Life...Not Just A Service. In-Control’s aim is to help people to be able to be fully in control of their lives.
The day will have the theme of personalisation and self managed funding. There are over 8 guest speakers and the day is suitable for people from all walks of life.

Let's get started... getting ready for school and life – State-wide Workshops July & August
These workshops, organised by Family Advocacy, will provide information useful for families who would like their child with disability to attend an ordinary mainstream school, with appropriate support. Workshop locations are: Coffs Harbour, Wollongong, Burwood, Bankstown, Penrith, Hornsby, Gosford and Newcastle.

ASSID Conference – September 29th – October 1st 2010 – Brisbane
The Australasian Society for the Study of Intellectual Disability annual conference will be held in Brisbane later this year.
The theme for this conference is “Seeking Excellence”, with presenters talking about topics such as partnerships, ethics, advocacy, social inclusion, individualised funding, health and communication.
There are many international guest speakers presenting at what promises to be an enlightening and exciting conference.

ADHC – Stronger Together 2 Consultations
During June and July 2010 the Minister for Disability Services, Peter Primrose is hosting a series of consultations across the state to inform the next phase of Stronger Together.
Stronger Together is the NSW Government’s 10 year plan for people living with a disability in NSW.
NSW CID has been invited to consultations on this matter and will be using the opportunity to inform the Minister and Department of some of the areas that we would like to be included in the Stronger Together 2 phase.
